Frequently Asked Questions

General

Q: What is Meshtastic?

In a nutshell, Meshtastic is a text-based radio mesh network. It allows users to send messages to and from different "nodes" without using cellular networks or an internet connection.

Meshtastic.org is a great place to go to learn more about the network, and there are some excellent groups on Reddit, Facebook, and Discord full of knowledgable users for those looking for technical support or advice on how to get started with Meshtastic.

Q: How do I use these devices?

The H1 and R1 are ready-to-use mesh devices that are preloaded with Meshtastic firmware. When paired with your phone via Bluetooth, these devices allow you to communicate using text-based messaging through an “off-grid” system that relies on radio frequency instead of cell service.

To use: download and install the Meshtastic app from the iOS App Store or Google Play store, then connect your device via bluetooth.  Set your region and you're ready to start messaging!

Q: What kind of charging cable do I need for these devices?

All of our devices use a USB-C cable for charging.  A data cable should be used for updating firmware.

Q: I can't get the GPS to work, what do I do?

On some phones, the user needs to give permission to the Meshtastic app to use GPS. You should be able to do this by going into your phone's settings menu, then changing GPS permissions specifically for the Meshtastic app.

Q: Are these devices weatherproof?

The H1 and R1 are not weatherproof, please avoid getting them wet and do not expose them to temperatures above 120°F (50°C).

Q: Can I order a custom color?

Custom colors are not available at this time.

Shipping/Returns

Q: What is your return policy?

Please see our return policy here.

Q: Do you ship overseas?

Generally yes, please see our shipping policies here.

H1

Q: What is the range of each antenna option?

The biggest variable in determining range for Meshtastic devices is line of sight, which can vary greatly depending on terrain, physical barriers, and even weather. Operating in areas with fewer obstacles can yield much higher ranges between nodes.

Comparing the two antennas, the stubby antenna has a measured SWR (Standing Wave Ratio) of 3.5 and the whip antenna is measured at 1.3, with the lower number indicating better performance.

Q: Does the H1 complete device come with onboard GPS?

The H1 is designed to use your phone’s GPS via bluetooth connection with the Meshtastic app, so it does not have an onboard GPS chip. This results in reduced battery consumption and a smaller design footprint.

Q: Can I use my own antenna with this device?

As long as the antenna fits the SMA connector and fits within the space allowed for the antenna it is fully interchangeable.

Q: How do I assemble the H1 case?

Q: What battery fits in the H1 case?

The H1 was designed to use a 803048 sized (1200mAh) battery that can be purchased here.

Q: Is there space for a GPS/Bluetooth antenna/larger battery in the H1 case?

The H1 is designed with space efficiency in mind to give the device the smallest design footprint possible. There is no extra room in the case for other components.

R1

Q: What is the battery life of the R1?

Under normal use, you should expect 2 full days of battery life.

Q: What is the range of the R1?

The biggest variable in determining range for Meshtastic devices is line of sight, which can vary greatly depending on terrain, physical barriers, and even weather. Operating in areas with fewer obstacles can yield much higher ranges between nodes.

The R1 antenna performs similarly to the H1 with stubby antenna, which has a measured SWR (Standing Wave Ratio) of 3.5.

Q: Does the R1 come with onboard GPS?

The R1 is designed to use your phone’s GPS via bluetooth connection with the Meshtastic app, so it does not have an onboard GPS chip. This results in reduced battery consumption and a smaller design footprint.
